Week Nine fantasy tips: TEs
UPDATED: 11/05/2009

What in the world has gotten into 49ers TE Vernon Davis, who all of the sudden has turned into God's gift as a fantasy tight end? Davis is on pace for a whopping 16 TDs, seven more than he managed in his first three years combined. Davis figures to continue being dangerous vs. the Titans this Sunday.

Almost as hot as Vernon Davis is Colts TE Dallas Clark, who continues to be on pace to break the league records for a tight end in receptions and receiving yards after catching eight passes for 99 yards against the Niners.

Keep an eye on Cardinals TE Ben Patrick, who had his first TD of the season after missing the first four games due to a suspension. The Cardinals like to use their tight ends in the red zone, and Patrick, who made a big TD catch in the Super Bowl last season, could become a bigger receiving weapon, especially if Anquan Boldin sits this Sunday.

Maybe it's time to start really paying attention to Packers TE/LB Spencer Havner, who scored TDs on the only two passes thrown to him last week. Havner has been a big surprise, but he's no Jermichael Finley, who had 12 catches for 198 yards and a TD in his previous nine quarters before going down with a knee injury. Finley is probably another week away from returning to action, but it remains possible that the Packers decide to let him suit up this Sunday.

Yes, Owen Daniels is out for the season, but don't rush out to pick up any of the Texans' other tight ends (James Casey, Anthony Hill, Joel Dreessen) just yet. Casey probably has the most long-term value of the group, but he's out 2-3 weeks with a knee injury. Hill is strictly a blocker. Dreessen will see his playing time increase in the interim, but he's the club's long-snapper, and the Texans could become wary of wearing him out. If you have to have one Houston tight end for Week Nine, Dreessen is your best bet, but his value could sharply decrease thereafter, so tread carefully.

Titans TE Bo Scaife caught 4-27-0 from former collegiate teammate Vince Young in Week Eight. Scaife isn't a threat to stretch the field, but he could have some value in deep PPR leagues.

Redskins TE Fred Davis, a popular pickup this week with Chris Cooley out another few games, will start against the Falcons and might see some opportunities to catch the ball Sunday.

Patriots TE Ben Watson has been slowed by a back injury but still should play against the Dolphins, who have been susceptible to good tight ends. Watch his status closely up until game time.
