Week Eight handicapping column
UPDATED: 10/29/2009

I like several totals on this week's card for a variety of reasons I've outlined below. I also will side with an underdog, which has been dangerous all season, but caution be damned in the Favre Bowl, I say.

On to the picks:

San Francisco at Indianapolis (O/U 43½)

The 49ers' defense has not held up particularly well in losses to Atlanta and Houston, but its offense got much more dangerous with the addition of rookie WR Michael Crabtree and the promotion of QB Alex Smith. The offense's increased explosiveness is particularly important when handicapping the total here; even if you believe the Niners are long shots to win the game, they have a better offense than they did when Shaun Hill was under center.

I'm not making a call on a side here, but the Over looks like a good value. The Colts have exceeded 30 points in their last four games, and the Niners, while not having Indy-like firepower, are better equipped to take on an opponent of this caliber than they were a few weeks ago.

Wilkening's pick: Over 43½

Jacksonville at Tennessee (O/U 45)
