Week 10 handicapping column
UPDATED: 11/12/2009

Week Nine was the domain of the underdog, as teams getting points covered in 10 of 13 games. What's more, the Steelers were the only favorite to cover the spread by more than a touchdown. In short, for favorite bettors, Week Nine was, at best, heartburn, if not out-and-out heartbreak.

In Week 10, I like one favorite, but I also like an underdog, an Over and an Under. This might be a first in my time writing this column.

On to the picks:

Buffalo (+6½) at Tennessee

We have seen this before: a preseason darling starts slow, only to recapture something close to its best form for a stretch around midseason. The 2002 Rams started 0-5 before reeling off five straight wins (and three covers) to get back to .500. The 2007 Saints lost their first four games before rebounding to win four straight (and cover three times).

In both cases, both clubs could not sustain their runs. The Rams finished the '02 season on 2-4 straight-up and 1-5 against the spread slides, while the Saints were 3-5 SU and ATS in the second half of the '07 campaign.

So we come to the case of the Titans, who have won two straight off the bye and draw an opponent with a weak run defense and a lackluster passing game. Laying less than a touchdown, they are the play, but we will keep a close eye on how long they can sustain this momentum.

Wilkening's pick: Tennessee

Philadelphia (+2½) at San Diego
