A healthy and happy new year to all of you from of us here at PFW world handicapping headquarters. I don't believe there was a follow-up to this.
On to the picks:
Washington at San Diego (O/U 39)
This looks like an 'Over' game to me. The Chargers, who have clinched the No. 2 seed, will rest some starters on offense, but they have good backups at running back, wide receiver and quarterback. The thought of Billy Volek throwing to Legedu Naanee is not going to scare me off of this game. Another factor I like: the Chargers also figure to be playing backups on defense for part of the contest.
The Redskins' lack of punch on offense recently (12 points in Weeks 15 and 16) doesn't bother me, either. Washington had scored 24 points or more in four of its previous five games before flopping vs. the Giants and Cowboys, so there's potential for improvement.
And there's more than enough potential for points to make the Over the play.
Wilkening's pick: Over 39
Cincinnati (+10) at N.Y. Jets
The AFC North-champion Bengals can't garner a first-round bye, and they figure to rest some starters. But I can't see them coming out flat in their first prime-time game of the season and after having no players voted to the Pro Bowl. I expect their defense, even if using more reserves than usual, to give the Jets' offense a tough game. The wind could be howling in the final regular-season game at Giants Stadium, and I doubt the Jets are willing to attack with the pass unless they absolutely have no choice.
