The Chargers announced Monday that they have signed QB Kevin O’Connell to back up Philip Rivers in training camp.

O’Connell took a physical with the team on Sunday and signed a one-year deal on Monday.

A former third-round pick by the Patriots in 2008, O’Connell played his college ball at San Diego State. He played in two games as a rookie and was with the Jets last season.

Chargers backup QB Charlie Whitehurst is out of practice with a knee injury, and Kyle Boller decided to retire one day after signing with the Chargers on Friday. O’Connell will join Rivers and undrafted rookie Jarrett Lee as the team’s healthy quarterbacks in camp.
