The Panthers have decided to retain head coach Ron Rivera. The Charlotte Observer first reported it, and the team confirmed the report minutes later.
Rivera compiled records of 6-10 and 7-9 in his first two seasons but appeared to be in grave peril when the Panthers started out 3-9. But a 4-0 finish apparently was enough to convince Panthers owner Jerry Richardson to bring Rivera back for a third season.
Richardson and Rivera met Saturday during which it is believed Rivera campaigned to return. The Panthers are still undergoing change, as they have yet to settle on a replacement for GM Marty Hurney, who was fired midseason.
