INDIANAPOLIS — Chiefs GM John Dorsey has been on the job a little more than six weeks, but he hasn’t had a chance to narrow down how many players he might consider for the first overall pick in April’s draft.

“I am considering 333 players in the Combine right now,” Dorsey said.

On Thursday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said the team would be open to the idea of trading the first pick. Dorsey certainly didn’t step away from that possibility.

“I am in a very unique situation sitting in the first spot, but I can say this: If (teams) want to come up, they are more than welcome, but I am going to first available player. Or, I am going to trade it. It all depends what is presented to me,” Dorsey said. “I am going to explore whatever opportunity is available and what is best for the Kansas City Chiefs.”

As for how much trade activity there might be involving the pick, Dorsey said, “time will tell.”

Quarterback is a top need. The Chiefs are almost certain to draft at least one. Dorsey believes that even without a banner class of QB prospects, the learning curve has improved given the more advanced nature of college passing games.

“What’s happened is the teaching in college has gotten so skilled at the quarterback position,” he said. “I think last year demonstrated that young kids can wind up starting in the National Football League. In years past, it took 2-3 years for that individual to be a starter.”

Dorsey said the team hasn’t met any of the quarterbacks here yet but that the Chiefs would meet with “six to eight” quarterbacks at the Combine.

The Chiefs have a few key free agents, including WR Dwayne Bowe and OLT Branden Albert, but Dorsey would not say if they would use the franchise tag this offseason. P Dustin Colquitt is another potential candidate for the tag, given the relatively manageable tender offer for the position.
