Mangini: 'Wildcat' should have been employed more vs. Chiefs
UPDATED: 09/20/2010

Browns head coach Eric Mangini said Monday the Browns "should have" used the "Wildcat" formation more in Sunday's loss to the Chiefs.

The Browns' version of the Wildcat, in which WR-RS Joshua Cribbs takes a direct snap, was deployed just once on Sunday. Cribbs, a former college quarterback, ran for one yard off left tackle on a 3rd -and-3 play late in the first half.

The idea behind increasing the use of the Wildcat, Mangini said, was to get Cribbs "more touches." Mangini said offensive coordinator Brian Daboll agreed with him that the package should have been used more against Kansas City.

The way we see it

Cribbs caught a 65-yard TD pass on Sunday, but he had just one kickoff return and one punt return as the Chiefs kicked away from him. Cribbs, who rushed for 381 yards on 55 carries (6.9 average) last season, has just 12 yards on four carries in two games.

In Week Three, the Browns face the rugged Ravens in Baltimore. Cribbs had no rushes in the first matchup with Baltimore a season ago and six carries for 34 yards in the rematch later in the season. It will be interesting to see if his carries are on the low or high end of that spectrum against a solid run defense.
